Next on Just One More Thing: “Word Games”

Well, that whole Mrs. Columbo/Kate Columbo/Kate Loves a Mystery thing had to come from somewhere, didn’t it? In our next one, we discuss the pilot, “Word Games.” Author Amanda Reyes (Are You In The House Alone?: A TV Movie Compendium 1964-1999) returns to take it all in. If you really want to see it beforehand, it’s on YouTube and nowhere else. But that’s entirely up to you.

I’m going to stick my neck out and say that the concept of the series is not necessarily awful. I can even imagine a halfway-convincing pitch for the series: who is this Mrs. Columbo that the Lieutenant is so crazy about? How does she spend her time? Maybe she could have an interesting story line of her own. And spinoffs have the great advantage that the audience is already familiar with the basic idea of the series.

Kate Mulgrew is talented, as we’ve seen from subsequent work. And the pilot had Robert Culp and Bob Dishy! (And… René Auberjonois? And Mr. Seinfeld?)

Unfortunately, the execution was pretty bad. I’m looking forward to hearing you talk about it. (And this wasn’t even the worst episode of the series — have you seen “A Riddle for Puppets”? Yeeegh…)
