President George W. Bush’s scheduled departure from office next year has many of our citizens preparing for a street fight of sorts. On February 1st, the upscale President Heights neighborhood is scheduled to add a second Bush St. to its ever-growing borders, and seven city organizations, including the Falmouth Hill Preservation Association, the Norbeck St. Residents’ Group, and Community Board 6 are urging the city to halt the proceedings. To succeed they will have to convince the city council to repeal a 139-year-old amendment to the city’s charter that ranks as one of the most short-sighted and destructive bits of legislation in city history. If the council refuses, as seems likely, a 12-block section of Norbeck St. in historic Falmouth Hill would be re-christened after our 43rd president. Several landmarks on that stretch – including one of the city’s oldest churches and the Teal Estate, the original mayoral mansion – could be torn down or renamed at the whim of the President Heights Community Association, notorious for its draconian covenants that regulate the height, appearance, name and function of buildings within its ever-expanding borders. The reason our city is almost powerless to stop this possible desecration of its own landmarks [...]

In a press conference this morning in the ornate lobby of the Chandler Building, actor William Atherton (Ghostbusters, The Sugarland Express) announced that he will be running as a democratic party candidate for mayor in May’s primary. The announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise, as there had been no rumors about his entry into the race. Mr. Atherton has held a home in the city’s posh President Heights section for three years. He joins these already declared candidates: Democratic Party :: Incumbent Mayor Joseph Wilders :: Two-term City Council member Terence Williams III (Son of the late mayor) :: Leonard Pierce, Fifth Ward party leader (Full disclosure: Mr. Pierce is also a sometime contributor to The City Desk) :: Homelessness/general political activist Perry Holmes Republican Party :: Alan Craw, local real-estate magnate :: Eight-term City Council member Maribeth Cosgrove :: Perennial also-ran Arthur Borden, on his fifth attempt at gaining the city’s top executive position. Independent (not participating in the primary) :: Lewis Armstrong (Libertarian) :: Louis M. Armstrong (Green Party, no relation to the Libertarian candidate or the late jazz musician) The primary will be held May 6. Debate details to come. - RJ White

While clearing a block of turn-of-the-century townhouses for a drive-through fondue restaurant, workers in 1973 discovered an artifact from the city’s former days as a gangland paradise. Wedged in between a basement wall was a metal strong box containing the last will and testament of Rory Sheehan, the fearsome Roxboro neighborhood mob boss. The box contained the will, a photographic portrait of Sheehan with his characteristic scowl, and an Irish tricolor flag. The discovery of the will not only shed some light on the enigmatic boss but also set off a three year hunt for a store of buried treasure that captured the attention of anyone within reach of a pickaxe. Rory Sheehan was born in 1879 in Dublin and settled in the city in 1894 with his father. The young Rory first found work as a grocery delivery boy. On his route was Wallace “Towers” Kinsky, the notorious state senator, who was working at the time in the DA’s office. Years later, “Towers” Kinsky would settle a sweetheart deal in the construction of the Wyndham Hydroelectric Dam with a company within Sheehan’s crime syndicate. In celebration of the deal, Sheehan treated Kinsky to a night on Issacs Street, in [...]

When state Rep. Walker Burke announced his candidacy for mayor this week, many pundits here in the city were confused. Burke’s in the middle of his fourth term and with the turnover in the recent elections, his seniority position’s been bumped up quite a bit and he’s been made the chairman of a very important finance committee- basically, Burke is in the position to do a lot of good for this city, on the state level. Why on earth would he want this thankless, stressful task? Perhaps he’s heard about the lost treasure of Old City Hall. Old City Hall (as it has been called from its beginnings) was completed in 1888, but had a lot of renovation work done in the late 1910s, particularly in the basement and foundation areas. Much of this work, as was the fashion at the time, was done by companies that had, shall we say, certain direct connections to the city’s underworld at the time. The contracting firm which oversaw the renovations and shoring up was a legitimate-seeming arm of the Angelo “Lucius” Moskowitz mob, a very powerful gang in the early 20th century. The legend has it that Moskowitz and his boys engineered [...]
