My grandmother says that her father had bought the family a canoe for Christmas that year, and they all laughed at him, saying, &quot;You&#039;ll never get that thing in the water!&quot; Fortunately, they were able to use it to get to church till the water receded.</description>

Although, having the influenza in 1914 might have spared our city the full effect of the world-wide epidemic of 1918.  Just don&#039;t mention that during our next exchange day with Ushuaia.</description>
